Elysium Health and Its Supplement Basis

Elysium Health is a direct-to-consumer science brand that wants to help people live healthier, longer. The company works directly with world-class scientists to translate advances in science and technology into clinically-validated health products that work.

Elysium Health was founded by Dr. Leonard Guarente in 2014. Dr. Guarente works as the director of the Paul F. Glenn Center for Biology of Aging at MIT in addition to his responsibilities as the chief scientist at Elysium Health. During his career, he has conducted significant research on the genetic and molecular causes of aging.

Elysium sells a supplement called Basis. Basis works to increase levels of the coenzyme NAD+ in our cells. As we age, the levels of this coenzyme decline naturally and the functions for which it is essential to break down. Basis restores higher levels of NAD+ and supports our cellular well-being as a result.

To ensure Basis works as intended, Elysium Health put Basis through a clinical trial in 2016. 120 people were divided into three equal groups. Group one received the recommended daily amount of Basis. Group two received double the recommended daily amount. Group three received a placebo. The group taking the recommended daily amount of Basis over the course of four weeks saw their NAD+ levels rise by an average of 40 percent. The 40 percent increase was sustained at eight weeks. The results of the study trial were published in the science journal npj: Aging and Mechanisms of Disease in November 2017.

Each jar of Basis contains a 30-day supply of the supplement, so Elysium sells Basis as subscriptions. An ongoing monthly subscription costs $50 per month but prepaying for a longer subscription decreases the cost per month. The most popular deal is the six-month subscription for $270, which breaks down to $45 per month. Individual jars of the supplement are also available for $60 each.
