Doe Deere, founder of Lime Crime shares a little of her story about moving to America from Russia. Doe, her mother, and her sister left their home in search of a better life and she details her experiences in an article on Entreprenuer.com.
Dreaming of a Better Life
Most little girls dream of being a being a princess, living in a castle and having a wardrobe that mirrors their “Barbie” clothes collection. As a little girl, Doe Deere had a different dream, she dreamed of what it would be like to live in America. She watched American movies, listened to American music and devoured everything related to life in the US.
Dreams Do Come True
Her dream came true when she got the opportunity to move to New York City with her mother and younger sister. Moving to a different country can be exciting and scary all at the same time for someone only seventeen years old. She helped her family by taking odd jobs to help make ends meet.
Hardships Make You Stronger
Our character is shaped by the hardships we endure to survive, and the willingness to persevere. With her mother not able to find work due to employment records, and the family’s resources dwindling, they found themselves living in a homeless shelter.
While this was not part of her dream (being homeless) it did get the family in touch with people who changed the course of their lives for the better. A social service agency helped her mother secure a job in accounting, and the two sisters were able to get an education in two prestigious colleges.
Her education from the Fashion Institute of Technology inspired her dreams of being an entrepreneur and creating her own line of vegan, cruelty-free beauty products.
Hardships and struggles in life make us into the people we will become. Without those bumps in the road of life, we may take a different turn or give up all together never realizing our full potential.
